Paralegal Certificate Program - printable brochure
This intensive, nationally acclaimed program is designed for beginning as well as advanced legal workers. It is an interactive course providing guided instruction and a comprehensive knowledge of the American judicial system.Students will be trained to assist trial attorneys, interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law and assist in preparing cases for courtroom litigation. The instruction is practice-oriented and relates to those areas of the law in which legal assistants are most in demand. There are no prerequisites, but students will be expected to complete a significant amount of homework for each week's sessions. This program will help students increase their office’s efficiency, productivity, and billable hours as well as learn new marketable job skills. Successful graduates will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from Ohio University. Students residing in California may be required to complete advanced coursework to meet new legislative requirements.
The Paralegal Certificate Course is a 15-week program divided into two seven-week sessions: Paralegal One and Paralegal Two. There is a one week break between sessions.
Paralegal One: Introduction to Paralegal Studies provides the foundation for the study of paralegalism. During this seven-week course, you will gain a detailed understanding of the American legal system, legal terminology, and ethics. You will learn how to prepare pleadings, discovery, motions, and beliefs, and will review the rules of evidence and civil procedure.
Paralegal Two: Advanced Paralegal Concepts continues the legal education developed in Paralegal One. You will learn the advanced skills of legal research, writing, and proper citation format. You will also be taught how to prepare important legal documents relating to real property, corporations, partnerships, wills, trusts, bankruptcy, and domestic relations, and will study formal and informal advocacy techniques and principles of appellate procedure.

Advanced Paralegal Certificate Program
This Paralegal Certificate Program (Prerequisite: Paralegal Certificate Course) has also been designed for those who wish to learn about the American legal system, to litigate their own cases on a pro se basis, to assist their retained attorneys in litigating their own cases, to prepare themselves to excel during their first year of law school, to work in a law office in a position other than that of a paralegal or attorney, or to work as a paralegal outside of the state of California.
Students are required to complete six Advanced Paralegal Course topics to complete the requirements for the online Advanced Paralegal Course. Each course topic is offered in a seven-week online session. Students must successfully complete the Core Requirements before they take the Advanced Paralegal Course. More than one Advanced Paralegal Course topic may be taken during a seven-week online session and Advanced Paralegal Course topics do not have to be taken in any particular order. Online participants should expect to spend at least 45-50 hours reading and preparing assignments and tests for each course. Participants who successfully complete six of the topics required of the Advanced Paralegal Course will earn up to 24 CEU's and will receive a certificate of completion from the college or university with which they have registered.
